Timofej Podolskij. Obama is ready to refuse from ABM

2009 04 09

Teheran should stop the development of its nuclear programme. If it happens – there will be no ABM complexes in Europe. This was stated on 5 April by Barack Obama.

“Provided the threat from Iran falls off, motivation for establishing ABM in Europe disappears”, - noted the USA President in his public speech in Prague addressed to the issues on nuclear weapons.

The USA is going to “struggle for the reduction and non-distribution of nuclear weapons”, leading to full destruction of it in the future, noted Obama. He stressed that the start for such process has been given at the meeting in London with the President of the RF Dmitrij Medvedev.

Moreover, the President of the United States is ready to promote at the Congress the process of ratifying the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) and expects to conclude a new Agreement with Russia concerning the reduction of strategic offensive weapons (SOW) until the end of the current year. It should be noted that according to the plans of Obama, all nuclear states will be invited to join the Agreement concerning the SOW.

The key aim of the visit of Obama to Prague, as stated, was the negotiations with the President of the Check Republic Vaclav Klaus; also a planned meeting with the heads of the EU. The main topic of the Summit is related to the issues of nuclear security. Among other issues to be discussed at the meeting are the problems of climate changes and energetic security.
