The President of Russia Dmitri Medvedev stated on 19 October, that he will visit the NATO Summit in Lisbon next month and will leave open the possibility of cooperation between Moscow and the Alliance on the European missile defence shield, wrote the New York Times.
“The statement was made after two days of negotiations with the President of France Nicolas Sarcozy and the German Chancellor Agela Merkel at the seaside town of Dovil, in the North of France. It signifies again that Russia and the West are currently actively looking for the means of closer cooperation in the sphere of safety”, - wrote the author of the article Catherine Bennhold.
“I am going to visit the Summit Russia – NATO, - said Medvedev at the press conference accepting officially the invitation to the event to be held on 19-20 November. – It will facilitate finding proper trade-offs and the development of the dialogue between the Russian Federation and the North Atlantic Alliance in general”.
“Officials noted that presence of Medvedev at the Summit of NATO was only possible after the decision of Moscow on Tuesday to withdraw military forces from Perevi, the Georgian village occupied during the short war between the two countries in 2008. For long months military forces were a stumbling stone blocking contacts with the NATO”, - says the article. “Now they have left, at least, and that means the organisation of the NATO Summit with Medvedev will be easier”, - said the German diplomat, willing to remain anonymous.
