The new President of Moldova promised to keep all relations with the European Union

Dodon said that President cannot be pro-Russian or pro-European and promised to protect the interests of Moldova.
All relations of Moldova in cooperation with the European Union will remain in force, said the newly elected President Igor Dodon.
"We have left aside these phobias - I have told you many times already. We will keep all relations with the European Union, absolutely, each and all. Many Europeans have addressed me and there were calls from Brussels. All relations with the West and the EU remain in force. We want to restore relations with the Russian Federation. You saw I was congratulated on the victory, and I hope to visit Russia before the end of this year ", - he said.
He promised he will be the President for all citizens of Moldova and will keep good relations with all countries.
“President cannot be pro-Russian or pro-European. President will protect the interests of Moldova. I will defend the interests of our citizens: not Russians, not Europeans, not Romanians. I will protect interests of all people living in Moldova, regardless of their ideological and geopolitical views", - he added.
As The Economist writes, it is very tempting to consider the elections in Moldova as a struggle between pro-Russian and pro-Western politicians. But actually the political life of Moldova is dominated by oligarchs, who are rather motivated by financial than geopolitical interests.
Expert Victoria Bukatar of the Moldovan centre Foreign Policy Association suspects that a socialist Igor Dodon has signed a "secret alliance" with the most influential businessmen of Moldova Vlad Plahotniuk. She is convinced that Dodon will fulfil his promise of paying his first visit as the President of Moldova to Moscow, and then travel to Brussels. Most likely he will also ignore his pre-elective promises of breaking the agreement on association with the EU, because, unlike Russia, the member states of the Union and the United States provide a substantial financial assistance to Moldova.
