For effective complex defence of Latvia, the establishment of a permanent division of the National Armed Forces has started in Latgale, reported the official website of the Ministry of Defence.
It is planned to form a unit of a professional army with BMD defence functions within the structure of the 3rd Brigade of the Zemessardze, which will be located in Daugavpils, Rezekne and Preili.
The NAF Commander Raymond Graube noted that the deployment of additional units will increase the combat readiness of the eastern region of Latvia. "The establishment of units in Latgale – will contribute not only to the strengthening of the country's defence, but also open opportunities to the people of the region for serving closer to home," - said Graube.
The armed forces of Latvia is inviting residents of Daugavpils, Rezekne, Preili and the surrounding areas to apply for service in the new division.
