Ukraine has filed a lawsuit against Russia in the International Court of Justice for terrorism and racism (69)

2017 01 19

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine filed a lawsuit in the UN International Court of Justice against Russia within the framework of the International Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism and the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, says the site of the Foreign Minister. This is done on the instructions of the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, issued on 16 January.

According to the plaintiff, Russia breaks the first convention "by providing weapons and other means of support to illegal armed formations, which have committed a number of acts of terrorism on the territory of Ukraine." Among the terrorist attacks on the part of Russia Kiev considers the catastrophe of the "aircraft of Malaysian Airlines, flight MH17, shelling residential areas of Mariupol and Kramatorsk, destruction of the civilian passenger bus near Volnovakha and deadly explosion during a peaceful meeting in Kharkov."

Russia violates the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination by "discriminating non-Russian communities residing on the occupied territory of the Crimean peninsula, in particular, the communities of ethnic Ukrainian and Crimean Tatars", - maintains the statement of the Foreign Ministry. The Plaintiff considers that the "Russian occupational authorities conduct policy of cultural extermination of these communities." The following examples are given to support the statement: a referendum on joining the Crimea to Russia, the ban of activities of Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, as well as " waves of disappearances, murders, arbitrary searches, arrests, attempts to stop media broadcasting, as well as restrictions on teaching of the Ukrainian and the Crimean Tatar languages", - the statement denotes.

Ukraine asks to bring Russia to justice and restore the "rights of the Ukrainian people." In addition, the plaintiff insists on the introduction of interim measures "for preventing the continuation of human rights violations by the Russian Federation during the consideration of the court case in the main."
