Darius Varanavičius, political scientist, executive editor of the magazine "The State"
2007 03 10

www.blotter.ru/news/article0CA99/default.aspRecently, while speaking in the Senate, J.Michael McConnell, the United States Director of National Intelligence, was quite pessimistic about the future relations between the U.S. and Russia. According to him, „economic and political achievements have strengthened Russia‘s self-reliance and allowed to increase the expenditure for defense and seek foreign policy goals, which are not always in compliance with the goals of the West“.

Military humanitarian interventions: solidarity or national interests? (1)

Kristina Puleikytë
2007 03 10

http://www.justwartheory.com/Expectations that the end of the Cold War will finally bring long-term peace and stability, were huge; however they fell flat during 10th decade of 20th century.  Out of 111 conflicts, which took place between 1989 and 2001, seven can be considered as trans-national. Conflicts endanger stability of the states where they occur, as well as security of the citizen; at the same time they are a threat to regional and international stability.

Martynas Zapolskis
2007 03 07

newsfromrussia.com/world/2005/12/26/70481.htmlThe United States considers India and Pakistan as reliable allies, however, the paradox is that India and Pakistan, declaring their ally with the States, are enemies. The key impetus of this antagonism is not only the irresolvable problem of Kashmir, but also the fundamental differences of the above states: democratic Hindu India versus authoritarian and Muslim Pakistan.

www.japon.ru/?Text&ID=42023Article 9 of the Constitution of the occupied Japan, adopted in 1947, stipulated that the state would never have military forces of land, sea, air etc. and would not acknowledge any military actions.

However, back in the sixth decade Japan started the formation of military forces under the title Self-Defense Forces, and became a well-armed state: in 1990 it was the third in the world according to military expenses (5% of DGP); its military sea-forces have become one of the most powerful forces in the world; in 1992 the issued law provided for a possibility to Japan's military services to contribute to the UN’s humanitarian missions abroad.

2007 02 19

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/country_profiles/1238242.stmQuite often Uzbekistan is considered as one of the former Soviet Central Asian countries,  balancing between East and West and having no clear geo-strategic vision. However, circumstances determining the specific foreign policy trend of this country are not yet fully investigated.

http://www.prima-news.ru/eng/news/articles/2003/4/3/23881.htmlBelarus is turning towards the West, and President A. Lukashenka makes all his efforts so as to prove that he is a reliable partner of the European Union (EU). The above vision on the development of the country was presented by him this week. However, not long ago the westwards-looking politician expressed his particular criticism about „the rotten capitalism", demonstrated his loyalty to Moscow and elaborated joint plans for struggle against imperialism together with presidents of Venezuela and Iran.

Kosovo’s Future Status: Independence or Autonomy?

Kristina Puleikytë
2007 02 14

http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/europe/jan-june99/kosovo_3-11a.htmlOfficially Kosovo is still part of the Serbian state, however, de facto this province is a protectorate of the United Nations (UN). About 90% of Kosovo’s 2 million population are Albanians, seeking their independence. The new Serbian Constitution defines Kosovo as an integral part of Serbia, however, the Kosovo Albanians do not agree with that and seek full independence from Serbia. Meanwhile the Western diplomats want this province to obtain wide, but not full independence.

Česlovas Iđkauskas, political analyst
2007 02 05

http://tf1.lci.fr/infos/france/0,,3307097,00.html„To win delicately“ – this is the electoral motto of N.Sarkozi, the candidate of the center-right party UMP („The Union for a Popular Movement“) and Minister of the Interior of the country. However, instead of demonstrating resolution and implacability as a leader of a power structure, he looked sensitive and a bit sentimental during the congress of the party, which took place in the middle of January.

Belarus within the concept of the Baltic-Black Sea region (306)

Vadim Volovoj, Doctor in Political Sciences
2007 01 19

In the chain of the democratic or Euro-Atlantic oriented states of the Baltic-BlackSea region, Belarus distinguishes by its critical approach towards the West, and especially the NATO. Dictatorship is obvious in Belarus, however, despite forecasts, there are no signs of collapse in the country. A.Lukashenko is supported by no less than half of the citizens of the country, and political isolation of the Minsk regime from West does not have major impact on him.
